History
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its rich architectural heritage, the Loire Valley boasts a fascinating past: Renaissance chteaux, medieval fortresses, gardens, abbeys, and much more. It is also renowned for its rich landscapes and the diversity of its wine-growing terroirs. Indeed, wine-growing has been an integral part of the way of life here for centuries. The Pouilly vineyards appear to have been officially recognised as early as the 5th century and the Pouilly Fume AOC was created in 1937.
Regional Information
Covering an area of 75,000 hectares, the Loire valley is France's third largest wine-growing region. The Loire region is unique in its grape varieties and iconic in its climate, the two coming together to produce a range of wines that reflect the rich diversity of the terroirs they cross. Pouilly-Fum is an appellation d'origine contrle (AOC) for the dry sauvignon blanc white wine produced around Pouilly-sur-Loire, in the Nivre dpartement.
