Who is at risk of high cholesterol?
You’re at risk of high cholesterol if you:
- are over 40
- are overweight (at any age)
- eat an unhealthy diet
- have a family history of heart disease
- have an unhealthy lifestyle

What’s tested?
Cholesterol levels
- Total cholesterol: Measures the total amount of cholesterol in your blood.
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL): Known as good cholesterol. Helps remove other forms of cholesterol from your arteries.
- Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): Known as bad cholesterol. High levels can cause cholesterol to build up in your arteries.
- TC:HDL ratio: The level of good cholesterol in your blood compared to your overall cholesterol level.
- Non-HDL cholesterol: The total amount of bad cholesterol in your body. Higher numbers mean a higher risk of heart disease.
- Triglycerides: A type of fat stored in your blood. High levels can mean a higher risk of heart disease.
- HDL percentage: The percentage of good cholesterol that makes up your body's total amount of cholesterol.
